Flexible mobile access to Exchange - without comprising security
Email remains the single most popular application on the Internet after the browser and its business value is paramount. Which makes it all the more important to ensure employees can access their email anywhere, anytime from any PC.
Even with the native configuration tools, enabling remote access to Microsoft Exchange is easy. The bit that’s tricky is doing it securely – without spending a fortune.
G/On is a cost-effective alternative to the standard security options of using secure tokens to authenticate users and and VPNs to encrypt the data. G/On goes further, protecting the connection from malware on the PC and minimizing the need for Network Access Control (NAC) solutions, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) and Identity Management Systems (IdM or IMSs). This is because G/On only requires one port to be open on the firewall and the G/On server only responds to requests for access from authentic G/On clients i.e. those that know its shared secret.
High level of flexibility
G/On gives IT administrators a high degree of flexibility when it comes to how they let users access Microsoft Exchange. They can enable access via:
- A locally installed Outlook client on the user’s PC
- Outlook Web Access
- Microsoft Terminal Services
- Remote Desktop
Using G/On Zones, different options can be used depending on which PC and which IP address the user is connecting from. For example, if a user logs on from their corporate laptop or an IP address that you recognize such as a branch office, you would consider these trusted connections and allow them to use their locally installed Outlook client. However, if they log on from an IP address you don’t recognize or use their G/On USB key in an hotel lounge, then you can increase the level of security by having G/On automatically restrict their log in options to a Terminal Services session.
